So! What actually is Mantrailing?

Mantrailing is one of the fastest growing sports for dogs. It is hide and seek for pet owners and pet dogs where the dog and owner work as a team to find a missing person by following a scent trail left behind. Search and rescue teams, the police and the military all use this life saving skill at an operational level. Mantrailing uses the principles of these skills and adapts them for fun so that everyday owners and everyday dogs can also enjoy them…. And it’s addictive!

Humans have unique scent which is like a genetic fingerprint, this contains sweat, hormones and skin cells and as we move our scent spreads outward from us and travels on the air attaching itself to the surrounding environment. In mantrailing we are essentially teaching the dog to be able to identify this specific human scent trail over the other environmental scents which may be present.

The game taps into the dogs natural ability and fundamental instinct to sniff and follow a scent. They use their nose and brain to hunt for a trail layer – the missing person or misper! A scent article is left by the misper for the dog to sniff and the dog then follows the scent trail to find the missing person, once found the dog is presented with its favourite high reward food or its favourite toy.

We as humans get to join in the fun by watching them work and learning from the dog as they progress through their mantrailing journey. Mantrailing is a wonderful low impact activity/game which exercises and enriches both you and your dogs minds without having to do a big walk or workout. It gives you quality time with your dog that helps form a strong human and dog relationship.

The sport of Mantrailing is accessible to all. We adapt the training to every dog and owner’s needs. Any age can join in, any breed and any temperament. Reactive dogs love our sessions as we work the dog individually so they also can enjoy the fun. Even dogs in wheels can trail!
